Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using) to the butter mixture and beat until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, wrap each in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out one portion of dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  8. Using heart-shaped cookie cutters, cut out cookies and place them 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until edges are set but not overbaked.
  10. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Optionally, dust with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

For an extra festive touch, decorate the cookies with melted white chocolate drizzle or colorful icing after they have cooled.
