Homemade Bread

This homemade bread features a soft, fluffy texture with a crisp crust, perfect for sandwiches or as a side to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 1/4 tsp)
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, dissolve sugar and yeast in warm water. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil.
  3. Mix until a shaggy dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down dough, shape into a loaf, and place in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

For a richer flavor, brush the top with melted butter right after baking. You can also add herbs or garlic for a savory twist.
