Homemade Crispy Onion Rings

Deliciously golden and crunchy homemade crispy onion rings made with fresh onions and a perfectly seasoned batter, ideal as a snack or side dish.

  • 2 large yellow onions
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ cups panko breadcrumbs
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice onions into ¼-inch thick rings. Separate the rings carefully.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, paprika, and black pepper.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  4. Dip each onion ring into the flour mixture, then into the buttermilk mixture, and finally coat with panko breadcrumbs.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large skillet to 375°F (190°C).
  6. Carefully fry the onion rings in batches for 2–3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Notes

For an extra crispy texture, double coat the onion rings by repeating the batter and breadcrumb step before frying.
