Homemade Green Bean Casserole

A classic and comforting green bean casserole made from scratch with fresh green beans, creamy mushroom sauce, and crispy fried onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb fresh green beans, trimmed and cut in half
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp soy sauce
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 1/2 cups crispy fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add green beans and cook for 3-4 minutes until crisp-tender. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions, garlic, and mushrooms; sauté until mushrooms are browned and onions are translucent, about 5-6 minutes.
  4. Sprinkle flour over the mushroom mixture and cook, stirring, for 1-2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Slowly whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 3-4 minutes.
  6. Stir in soy sauce, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat.
  7. In a casserole dish, combine green beans and mushroom sauce. Mix well and top with crispy fried onions.
  8. Bake uncovered for 20-25 minutes, until bubbly and golden on top.

Notes

For extra crunch, add freshly toasted breadcrumbs on top before baking or use fresh fried onions for best flavor.
