homemade mozzarella sticks

Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, these homemade mozzarella sticks are a perfect snack or appetizer loved by all ages.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 2 cups Italian-style breadcrumbs
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Marinara sauce for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cut the mozzarella string cheese sticks in half to create 24 pieces.
  2. Set up a breading station with three shallow bowls: one with flour, one with beaten eggs and milk, and one with seasoned breadcrumbs mixed with garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  3. Dip each cheese stick first in flour, shaking off excess, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat thoroughly with the breadcrumb mixture.
  4. Place the coated sticks on a baking sheet and freeze for at least 30 minutes to prevent cheese from leaking during frying.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Fry the frozen mozzarella sticks in batches for 1-2 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve immediately with warm marinara sauce for dipping.

Notes

For extra crunch, double coat the mozzarella sticks by repeating the egg and breadcrumb steps before freezing. Serve immediately for the best melty texture.
